ARTIST IN FOCUS: JOSHUA MIELS

Joshua Miels is a Contemporary Australian artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. Painting predominantly in oil paint, each piece of Joshua's tells a unique story.

By experimenting with each painting and layering different techniques Joshua is able to engage viewers and prompt them to draw upon their own emotions to experience the artwork in a very personal and intimate way.

'Tears Run Dry'

Above is one of my favourite images of Joshua Miels'. The portrait of this woman is powerful yet calming at the same time. For me it brings out a lot of emotions from my own childhood and encourages me to reminice about another time in my life.

'Eileen'
Capturing the vulnerability and emotions which most people try to hide makes these artworks so very interesting and engaging.

'Man in the Mirror'

Joshua's artworks are powerful and  ambiguous, their layered surface a nod to the the multi-faceted nature of the human being.

'Fractured'
Joshua has showcased his works in exhibitions throughout Adelaide and Victoria and has won multiple awards over the last couple of years which has catapulted him into the category of  an artist to watch!

CONTEMPORARY ART CHOICES

Choosing Artwork for a contemporary home can be a little daunting. I have found the most valuable thing to consider when purchasing contemporary art and art in general for that matter is to look at the artwork critically and ask yourself, in 10, 20, 30 years time will I still want this on my wall?

Abstract Woman by Josh Bryan
The painting above is one I have chosen for a client recently. I had given two options. The one pictured above as well as the abstract painting below. The abstract of the face was my preferred painting and the client agreed.

‘Growing Together ‘by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton
The client wanted the painting to be an investment piece that blended in with their colour scheme and furniture.  This artwork I feel provokes more of an emotional connection, which is why I chose it over the complete abstract, although both choices could have worked.

When choosing a frame for this painting, I was mindful that I did not want to over-power the artwork with a heavy frame. Instead choosing a more delicate frame that faded into the background and subtly defined the work.

ARTWORK FOR A PERIOD HOME

For some people artwork is just a pretty picture to hang on a wall. For me, an artwork needs to make you feel something, engage you and draw you in. Transporting you to another time or place and provoking feelings you otherwise may not have felt.  Artwork is a living, breathing emotion!

When choosing an artwork for a client I am always mindful of these things. Art is extremely personal, meaning each person will have a unique take on how they view a piece of art.

Albert Charles Lebourg

Above is an artwork I have chosen for a newly renovated Victorian home. The client wanted to keep the old world charm of the house and bring in some modern takes on old classics to acknowledge the past whilst still being current.

Being the focal point of the room the artwork needed to be a statement piece without overpowering the room. This artwork was painted by the French painter Albert Charles Lebourg and will be a great investment piece for the client.

Framing your artwork is another important element to consider. To enhance the artwork and tie in with the period home, I have chosen a broken gold frame. It complements the colors in the painting and will really complete their room.

The color palette and style of your home will also influence the piece you choose. In some instances the piece of art may determine the entire look of a house and become the inspiration for an entire style!

CURRENT TREND FOCUS - TECH-LESS LIVING ROOMS

In todays society of tech savvy individuals you would be hard pressed to find a group of friends out for dinner and not find a phone, tablet or other electronic device on the table.

Society has become so focused on needing to know every detail, and needing instant answers that we have forgotten how to interact face to face with people.

So you might not be surprised that I am thrilled with the emerging trend of the tech-less living room. That’s right people are ditching the media devices for human interaction and I couldn’t be happier.

These uber sexy and sophisticated rooms are perfect in every way, including the no TV on the wall.

Don’t get me wrong there is still a place for technology in the household, but identifying a technology free room in the house is just about the best trend I have come across in a long while.

By eliminating the media and the defined use of the room, the possibilities are endless and suddenly become a whole lot more exciting to design! So go find that perfect artwork, install the custom fireplace, splash out on a beautiful library – Let your imagination run wild!
