BE ORIGINAL: THE COST OF REPLICA FURNITURE ON THE DESIGN INDUSTRY

Lets talk money!! As a mother of 2 I definitely get that the cost of things REALLY DOES MATTER. Gone are the days where I could fall in love with a piece of furniture and just buy it, not having to justify why I am spending an obscene amount of money on ONE chair.

However, on the flip side I totally get it. If I design my lounge room and it has an Eames lounge chair in it – well then, that’s what I am going to buy, an Eames Lounge Chair, and let me explain why.
Original Eames Lounge Chair

When looking at an artwork, for say $10,000 you look at it with admiration and you connect with it. Taking in all the work that has been put into it by the artist. It will hang beautifully on your wall and you can admire it for years to come. It can be passed down to family for generations and people will know that’s an original artwork. Well when you look at a piece of furniture it is exactly the same. An artist has put endless hours into designing and creating this functional piece of art, so why wouldn’t you pay for it.

Unfortunately people no longer look at it as art. They see a price tag and if they can get a ‘similar’ look for a fraction of the price they will. But lets think about this shall we, when you are looking at getting a ‘piece of art’ such as an Eames Lounge Chair, how much money are you really saving by buying a replica? Will the one that cost you $2000, is poorer quality and doesn’t have the same resell value, really be the best bang for your buck.

People need to start looking at furniture as an investment rather than a quick fix, if they don’t there will no longer be a design industry and then where will the replicas come from?
